PT. Sarmiento Parakantja Timber (Sarpatim) is a timber company that is engaged in organized and well planned exploitation and utilization of forest resources located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia which started operations in 1973.
In conducting its forest operations, Sarpatim adheres to the Forestry Laws and established promulgated by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. Forest exploitation carried out by Sarpatim follows the principles of sustainable forest management (SFM).
SFM provides for sustainable management and stewardship in the use of forest and forest land in a way, and at a pace that maintains biodiversity, productivity, regeneration and potential to fulfill in perpetuity relevant ecological, economic and social functions that would not cause damage to the ecosystem. SFM therefore is a concept that attains balance between social demands for forest products and benefits and the preservation of forest health and biodiversity which is critical to the survival of the forest and the prosperity of forest-dependant communities.
In support of SFM, Sarpatim develops research and development activities covering all aspects of forest management activities carried out either independently or through collaboration with experts and national and international research institutions, including: Gadjah Mada University, Bogor Agricultural Institute, University of Lambung Mangkurat, Tropical Forest Foundation, and The Nature Conservancy.
Sarpatim implements community development programs in persuit of what it considers as its corporate social responsibility towards the environment and forest communities. Community development programs include aspects of education (scholarships and educational facilities), health services, economic infrastructure for distribution and marketing of agricultural products.
