ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Sarpatim is committed to sound environmental management by conducting its business operations in a manner that safeguards the environment. By rigidly complying with all applicable environmental laws and at the same time implementing practical measures to protect the quality of the environment, Sarpatim contributes its shares in conserving the forest biotic factors (plants, animals, birds and other living organisms) and abiotic factors (water, soil, climate, light, and oxygen) to maintain the balance of the ecological system of the natural forest.
Environmental impact assessments (EIA) are conducted to take account of the environmental and social consequences of the forest activities.
Sarpatim runs the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to minimize/reduce the negative impact from its operational activities by:
- Application of Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) or environmentally friendly logging.
- Conduct soil and water conservation measures to reduce levels of erosion and sedimentation.
- Planting areas that are non-productive or empty to keep the soil from erosion as well as for species enrichment.
- Controlling and monitoring of endemic species that are preceded by a study of the High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF).
- Monitoring of river water quality through measurement and laboratory analysis, carried out annually.
